Robert W. Van Epps, FCAS, MAAAPrincipal & Consulting Actuary
Rob Van Epps is a Principal & Consulting Actuary of The Actuarial Advantage, Inc. He is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He has more than 33 years 8 months 29 days of insurance and actuarial experience. Mr. Van Epps was formerly a Principal of Financial Risk Analysts, LLC, which merged with The Actuarial Advantage in 2021.
During his consulting career, Mr. Van Epps has provided service to traditional carriers in the form of reserve analyses, profitability studies, reinsurance analysis, and filing support. In the alternative risk market, he has provided feasibility studies, loss reserve reviews and opinions and other services to a variety of captives, risk-retention groups, public entities, and other self-insured mechanisms. He is under contract with several State Insurance Departments to provide reviews for captive applications and support for financial examinations.
Mr. Van Epps has extensive experience with all major property and casualty lines of business. He is qualified to provide statements of actuarial opinion in all major jurisdictions and serves as the appointed actuary for many insurance companies domiciled both domestically and off-shore. In addition, he provides reserve and funding analyses to over 20 public entity clients including counties, cities, towns, school boards, housing and transportation authorities, and risk pools.
Prior to joining Financial Risk Analysts in 2006, Mr. Van Epps was the Managing Director of AmWINS Actuarial Services, where he was responsible for review of the company’s program books of business. He also developed and grew an external consulting practice. Mr. Van Epps began his actuarial career working for Royal & SunAlliance Insurance, where he gained actuarial experience in pricing and reserving for both standard and unique insurance products, including structured financial products involving complicated cash flow analyses.
Professionally, Mr. Van Epps is a member of Casualty Actuaries of the Southeast. He has served on the Casualty Actuarial Society Examination Committee and the Education Committee for the South Carolina Captive Insurance Association. Mr. Van Epps has spoken at several local and regional actuarial functions. He graduated Cum Laude from Duke University in 1988 with Bachelor of Science degrees in mathematics and zoology.
